Childstar

3stars

A movie about making movies in Canada. Well no, only indirectly. Childstar is about two people; a 12 year old superstar from the US and a sadsack would-be-director, ex-university professor who is working as a chauffer to pay the bills. The former makes movies out of a sense of obligation; his parents, his fans, his agency and the producers are all counting on him to make them even more preposterously wealthy. The latter makes movies out of a sense of personal passion, no matter what it costs him financially.
It is an odd couple buddy movie of classic type, including all the usual spoiled-little-famous-kid and pretentious-art-major tropes. That being said, Childstar is professionally constructed, well acted and funny.
The only thing I regret was that, as usual for films shown at the Elgin, the director and other cast talked for HALF AN HOUR from the scheduled start time, so I had to leave before the credits to make it to my next movie.
