Director Ra'up McGee wanted to make a french noir crime movie, and he wasn't going to let the fact that he didn't speak French stop him. I respect that.

This movie cuts back and forth between the present day and the childhood of some of the characters. There's the coffee house waitress who makes bombs for the mob and gets paid in cash and English lessons. There's the twitchy problem gambler and the cold professional hit man. There's a complex set up with the hit man, a hit woman and their boss, the young new mobsters trying to move in, the MacGuffin, etc etc. Themes of loyalty, betrayal, cheating and "your price" are explored.

To me, this felt very much like a first film. The director had a lot of themes and characters he wanted to show, and the movie could have probably been tightened up by about half an hour with some good editing. Also, the hand of the director was pretty obvious, "this is the bit where I'm going to make it exciting by using a hand held camera and music", "this is the bit where the children are ominious", etc.

Even though I didn't like this movie, if Ra'up has a movie at next year's fest, I'll probably try and see it.
