What a great way to start the festival. I've learned that there should be one awesome and seriously Canadian movie per fest. Last year, it was the fantastic Phil The Alien, this year it's Guy Terrifico.
This movie, taken at face value, is about a "folk guitarist" from northern Alberta that wins the lottery and buys the life upgrade to "international rock star". Of course, he never existed. So what is the movie really about? Fame and celebrity, perhaps. Money, maybe. The stereotypical "lifestyle" of an international rock star, most likely. Folk, Country, and Rock music? As well as some Gospel, Soul, and a couple other genres you might care to mention? Definitely. The movie seems a bit supported by Kris Kristofferson, but you can't really say that that's a bad thing. The pessimistic might see the movie as a vehicle for the folk music of Matt Murphy and Michael Mabbott, but Guy had to have his own songs and someone had to write them, so you can't fault the movie there either.
In the end, it hardly matters what it's "really about", because it's well done, damn funny, and highly entertaining.
The myths that surround our musical celebrities are what ties the movie together so well and gives it the aura of grandeur that a documentary about a musical legend should have.
I would say that the high point of the movie is when he's going to play at The Isle of Wight for 500,000 screaming fans with half a dozen other legends and he's running around infront of Birmingham Palace with his underwear over his jeans and wearing a Candian flag like a cape and yelling out "I'm a National Treasure!"
Here's the best news of all: The soundtrack is all you could hope it could be and will be available for purchase shortly! Yay! I gotta remember to get me some of that...
